City agrees to electronic sign use
By Jeff Thompson
OSAGE BEACH - A request from the organizers of the upcoming “Passport to the
Parkway” event to use the city’s electronic signs was met with conditional
approval by the Board of Alderman.
Public Works Director Nick Edelman informed the aldermen of the request at the
board’s regular meeting last week.
“We’re starting to get these requests,” Edelman said, “especially for the
Passport to the Parkway (event).”
Passport to the Parkway will be held on the west end of Osage Beach Parkway Oct.
1-11.
Edelman pointed out that the city hasn’t allowed the use of the electronic
billboards for private events up to this point and his staff was “uncomfortable
with (deciding) which events can be accepted or declined” without guidance from
the aldermen.
He also pointed out that whatever is decided, the use of the electronic signs
should be conditional to the Public Works’ immediate needs.
“They need to be used for the Public Works Department first,” Edelman said.
He suggested creating a policy for the use of the electronic billboards, but
Alderman Kevin Rucker said there may not be enough time to create guidelines
before the Passport event.
“They’re going to need this before we create a policy and procedure,” Rucker
said.
Rucker made a motion to allow the one-time use of the electronic signs by the
Passport organizers.
Mayor Penny Lyons added that the use of the signs should be conditional to the
needs of the Public Works Department (in case of an accident or traffic delays).
The board agreed and approved the one-time request.
